Blank disc does not mean empty disc
In the blank disc there is a pre-groove track over which the data are written. The pre-groove track in a blank disc, contains timing information, ensures that the recorder follows the same spiral path as a conventional CD. A CD recorder writes data or information to a CD-R disc by pushing its laser to heat areas of the organic dye layer. However, the writing process does not produce indentations (pits); instead, the heat permanently changes the optical properties of the dye, in fact it changes the reflectivity of those areas.
